'Black Adam' tops the Halloween box office, and Clooney and Roberts entice fans to 'Paradise'

"Black Adam," the Dwayne Johnson-starring DC superhero film, remained at the top of the North American box office in its second weekend. According to studio estimates, "Black Adam" added $27.7 million in ticket sales, bringing its domestic total to $111.1 million, despite being down 59% from its debut and facing little new competition.

Johnson spent a decade trying to bring the character to the big screen and has plans for future Superman films. But, despite earning $250 million worldwide, the future of "Black Adam" is unknown. The film cost $200 million, not including marketing and promotion costs, and a sequel has not been officially approved.

However, big changes are afoot in Washington, DC: The studio recently announced a new leadership team led by Peter Safran and James Gunn, both of whom have a well-documented fondness for resurrecting obscure comic book characters. On Sunday, Johnson sent a message to his 344 million Instagram followers, announcing the end of the world press tour and thanking those who worked behind the scenes to launch "our NEW DC FRANCHISE known as BLACK ADAM."

Contrary to recent romantic comedy trends, moviegoers remained intrigued by "Ticket to Paradise," a Julia Roberts and George Clooney destination romp that dropped only 37% in its second weekend to finish second. The genre hasn't been the most dependable bet at the box office in recent years, with films like "Bros" floundering in theaters, but the star power of Roberts and Clooney is hard to ignore. "Ticket to Paradise" earned an additional $10 million in North American theaters, bringing its domestic total to $33.7 million. To date, it has grossed $119.4 million worldwide.

Meanwhile, horror films occupied positions three through five on the Halloweekend. "Prey for the Devil" debuted in third place with a $7 million opening weekend from 2,980 theaters. It is the only one of the three horror films that has been rated PG-13 rather than R.

"Smile" finished fourth in its fifth weekend with $5.1 million, bringing its domestic total to $92.4 million (on a $17 million budget), while "Halloween Ends" came in fifth with $3.8 million. "Ends," which has grossed $60.3 million in North America, was released concurrently on Peacock, a streaming service.

"This is just another mandate in favor of horror," says Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore. "It's not just the month of October; horror films have performed well throughout the pandemic. It's a genre that consistently outperforms at the box office."

This weekend, Chinonye Chukwu's Mamie Till-Mobley film "Till" grossed $2.8 million from 2,058 locations, placing seventh. The film has a positive word of mouth centered on Danielle Deadwyler's performance, with 98% fresh reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

This weekend also saw the release of Todd Field's "Tár," which opened in 1,087 theaters across the country, grossing $1 million and ranking 10th. Cate Blanchett's portrayal of a renowned composer and conductor earned her the top acting award at the Venice Film Festival last month.

"The Banshees of Inisherin," another Venice winner, expanded to 58 theaters and 12 new markets for the weekend. The film, directed by Martin McDonagh and starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, grossed $540,000. Next weekend, it will be expanded to approximately 800 locations.

Charlotte Wells' "Aftersun" expanded to 17 locations, earning $75,242, bringing its total earnings to $166,030. Throughout the awards season, the father-daughter film starring Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio will continue to expand.

"Armageddon Time" by James Gray debuted in six theaters in New York and Los Angeles for $72,000. Gray drew on his own childhood memories to tell the story of an 11-year-old boy in Queens in the fall of 1980. Banks Repeta, Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong, and Anthony Hopkins star in the film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.

Things will move slowly until the November 11 release of "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever."

"That will rekindle the box office in a way that feels more like summer," Dergarabedian predicts.

The final figures are expected on Monday.
