9 Steps To Prevent Hackers From Accessing Your Facebook Account

If you're like the vast majority of people, Facebook has overtaken all other websites as your favorite. Every day, you log into Facebook from a variety of devices, including your laptop, desktop, mobile phone, and office workstation. As a result, there's a chance that you might leave your account open after you've finished using it. You should make serious efforts to block unauthorized access to your account because doing so will open up a huge can of worms if it happens.

The simplest way to prevent the subsequent user of the device from accessing your account is to log out. However, it's a completely different situation if your smartphone or other device is stolen. We'll go over some crucial steps you can take in this article to restrict access to your Facebook account on a personal level.

1. Make a reliable password

You probably already have a password for Facebook, but it's best to make sure it's unique and different from the passwords you use for other online accounts, like email, a blog, hosting, etc.

Go to Account Settings > General > Password to modify your password.

Symbols, numbers, and a mix of small and capital letters make for the best passwords.

2. Verify your mobile phone number

One of many ways to increase the security of your Facebook account is to confirm your mobile number. In this manner, Facebook will be able to send you a new one via SMS even if you forget or lose your password.

Go to Account Settings > Mobile and select Add a Phone to add your mobile number.

Before clicking Next, choose your country and the mobile carrier.

You will now receive instructions on how to send an SMS to the provided number. Enter the code into the column after following the instructions to receive a code via SMS. You can also choose to Allow friends to text me from Facebook and Share your phone number with friends on Facebook. Make your selections, then click Next.

Now that Facebook has registered your phone, you can use this connection to reactivate your Facebook account if the need arises.

Turn on secure browsing. Now

You can enable the Secure browsing option, among other things, to ensure the security of your Facebook browsing. By doing this, you automatically prevent any third-party Facebook applications from harming you or stealing your personal information without your knowledge or consent.

Go to Account Settings by selecting it from the drop-down menu in the top right corner of your Facebook account.

From the menu on the left, choose Security.

Click the Edit link to the right of the Secure Browsing section.

Check the box next to "Browse Facebook on a secure connection" when the options panel appears, then click the "Save Changes" button.

4. Make "Login Approvals" active.

Facebook offers the login approvals feature, which entails entering a security code each time you attempt to access your account from an unidentified device. Go to Account Settings > Security, find Login Approvals, and click the Edit button to make Login Approvals active.

Check the box to activate the option to enable login approvals when it appears.

When a pop-up window with descriptions of login approvals appears, select Set Up Now to proceed.

If your mobile number is already registered, Facebook will automatically SMS a code to you. Click Submit Code after entering this code in the provided box.

Click Next to proceed now that your request for Login Approvals has been completed.

Following that, Facebook will offer you the option to set up a Code Generator from your phone, which is helpful if you are unable to receive SMS. Then click Next.

Android phone generator for codes

I'll use the Android activation as an example because I'm using an Android phone.

If you don't already have it, download the Facebook mobile app from Google Play. Click Next once you've downloaded it to your smartphone.

Facebook will give instructions on how to install the Code Generator once it has been downloaded. Launch your Facebook application, then select Add App from the menu under Account > Code Generator. Then press the Finish Setup button below.

As soon as your Code Generator becomes operational, Facebook will instruct you on how to use it. Launch your app the next time you need to generate a new code, tap on Account > Code Generator, and the code will appear. You can now click Close because you have successfully activated your login approvals.

5. Terminate earlier active sessions

Facebook's ability to tell you about previous active sessions, your login location, and the devices you used to access your account is a plus. Now, from the Account Settings > Security page, search for "Active Sessions" and click Edit to ensure the security of your account.

The current active session will now be listed at the top of the list along with all previous sessions. To terminate the activities from other devices, click the "End Activity" link.

6. Turn on private browsing.

By turning on the "Private Browsing" feature in your browsers, you can also stop someone from accessing your account. All browsers have a private browsing setting that, when selected, prevents your activity from being recorded in the browsing history.

Safari

Use Safari > Private Browing in the menu to enable Private Browsing if you're using the Safari browser on a Mac.

Firefox

Go to Tools > Start Private Browsing in Firefox.

Chrome

You have the choice to browse using the Incognito window if you're using Chrome; this is a version of the Chrome window where none of your browsing activity will be logged in. Go to File > New Incognito Window to open this window.

7. Don't click "Keep Me Logged In"

There is a tiny checkbox that says Keep me logged in when you go to the Log In page to access your Facebook account. Ensure that this box is not checked. Log in next as usual. When you launch Facebook with this turned on, you will be prompted for your email address and password.

8. Steer clear of spam links

Facebook takes spam seriously and is constantly improving its features to protect you from falling for scams. Attacks of this kind include phishing links that take you to phony websites, malicious links that could steal your personal information, or even links that could damage your computer. Money scams through direct or indirect requests via Facebook messages, chat, etc. Additionally, there is a possibility that you will receive emails purporting to be from "Facebook" but actually coming from a phishing website. This operation is a scam.

There are numerous ways to prevent becoming a victim:

1. Whenever you come across a suspicious link, no matter where you find it or who sent it to you, never click on it. Always go the extra mile and ask your friend what the link is when you receive one to make sure they actually sent it. Typically, the sender is unaware that these links have been "sent." This applies to all links from your email, Facebook Chat, Messages, friends' status updates, and even your Facebook Messages.

2. Avoid sharing your username or password with anyone, especially on websites with dubious links and design choices. Your personal information on Facebook may not be secure if you freely share your passwords.

3. Unless you are accessing via the Facebook App, log in only at www.facebook.com and not from any other links or websites.

4. Make sure your browser is up to date with the latest security patches to ensure that it can recognize and warn you when you are visiting a phishing site.

9. Exit after use.

Last but not least, and perhaps most importantly, always remember to log out of your Facebook account.

Conclusion

With these 8 options and the important reminder to log out, you can now browse Facebook without worrying. Most of us wouldn't have imagined that someone could take over our online accounts, but if the recent LinkedIn security breach proves anything, it's that there are people actively attempting to access our sensitive information online. Let's avoid making things any simpler for them.
