COMPUTER
A Computer is an electronic device that takes raw data as input from the user and processes it under the control of instructions to get results (output), and often saves it for future use.
Characteristics of Computers
These characteristics has made computers so powerful and universally useful:
Speed : Computers work at an incredible speed. A powerful computer is capable of performing about 3-4 million instructions per second
Accuracy : Computers give exact answers unless the error occurs from poorly designed systems or programs written by the programmer
Diligence : Computers can work for long hours with great speed and accuracy also with unbelievable consistency. Computers are capable of performing voluminous and repetitive tasks without getting tired
Versatility : Computers are capable of performing all sorts of tasks. They can also do many of the same tasks in different ways
Storage Capacity : Todays computers can store large volumes of data. Not only that, most computer comes with expandable storage facility along with external storage.
Memory : A computer has built-in memory called primary memory where it stores data. RAM (Random Access Memory) is the superfast and temporary data storage space in the computer system
Types of Computers
Computers can be broadly classified by their speed and computing power.
Personal / Micro Computers : They are the most common consumer devices. It is a small and have moderately powerful microprocessor. They are designed for individual use. Personal computers are common in homes and offices throughout the world. Desktops, Laptops.
Minicomputers : Mid-sized computers, currently called a server is larger and faster than Micro Computers and capable of supporting hundreds of users simultaneously. Normally used by small businesses & firms as servers for LAN of micro computers.
